Ricard-Cordingley was
recognised as the Master of Seascapes. He was born in Lyon 1873 and

taught in France by leading
French painters, including Jules Lefebvre. A painting by Jules
Lefebvre, titled
Chloe, (1875), caused an outcry when first exhibited in Paris. Chloe
came
to Australia for the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition and the
Melbourne Exhibition of 1880-81 where it won gold medals.

is known as the
painter of sea and sky, the edges where sand meets
sea, maritime images, and shipping
activities associated with ports and coastlines.
He is acknowledged as a master of seascapes. It was said
about him that he knew more ways of painting blue and
grey than any other artist. He had the unique ability to paint the most
subtle nuances of the fog of the Northern Seas, the reflection of the
sun on the Mediterranian, and the glistening of the moon on the ocean
waves.
Georges
Ricard-Cordingley came to Australia
in
approximately 1910. Two large works he did in Australia are "Port
of Sydney" and "Port of Melbourne".
In 1994 Ricard-Cordingley's "Port of Sydney" was sold at Sotheby's UK for AUD$100,000.00 |
