Nora Heysen (1911-2003).
Nora was one of Hans
Heysen's
seven daughters. Her father is best known for his immacualte
paintings of gumtrees.
Nora
Heysen was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize for painting
in 1938, and the first woman to be an official war artist in
WWII.
Awarding
the Archibald prize to a woman caused an uproar
amongst a group of painters stimulated by William Dargie public
declaration that a woman should not be entitled to contest the
Archibald Prize. Court action was considered by some of the losers
and sympathisers, but not taken.
Nora
Heysen was the only Heysen to "go east", as she said. Her move to
Sydney (City of Sin) from gracious Adelaide was not applauded by
her family.
